Match Point (2005, Woody Allen) + Trailer Watch

I was let down. For a movie with so many comments about how chance affects people, the main character sure seemed to be in control of his life (barring the very end, in which chance took a Wilton bounce.) I liked this better in 1989 when it was called Crimes And Misdemeanors. One major theme of both these films, which nobody seems to be talking about, is the ways in which powerful men feel that powerless women are disposable (both emotionally and physically.) I certainly found that a lot more interesting than the clumsy commentary about the role of luck in the life of man.

I certainly agree its the best Allen has done in quite a while, but what is that really saying when you’re comparing it against the likes of Hollywood Ending? Perhaps my expectations were too high from the hype machine.

Trailers!

  • This was about the 4th time I’ve seen the trailer for Bubble and its extremely entertaining. Looking forward to it, as I do all of Soderbergh’s films.
  • However I’ve seen the trailer for The World’s Fastest Indian about 80 times now, and the movie continues to look extremely bland and uninteresting. Hasn’t this come and gone already? Why am I still seeing this trailer? All that said, it is pretty cool to hear “Police On My Back” jamming out of the theatre speakers.
  • Imagine Me & You looks totally awful. Its like Chasing Amy with a straight girl turning gay. I just wanted to cringe.
  • I don’t know if I’m up for another Holocaust movie, but Fateless looks like pretty promising. I was mostly struck by the misty dreamlike quality of the images, which makes sense since according to IMDB the director Lajos Koltai has been cinematographer on almost 70 movies going back to 1970. This is his first time in charge. Music by Morricone too.
  • There was also a trailer for the DVD release of last year’s Oscar foreign film nominee Yesterday which I’ve seen twice now and it continues to not make much of an impact on me.

You didn’t see it at Pacific Place, I guess. We had different previews. The one for Brick (with Joseph Gordon Levitt) looked great and the others looked horrible, especially the Mel Gibson flick Apocalypto. That’s going to be a serious piece of shit.

Oh man, Brick is supposed to be awesome. I’m really looking forward to that.

i have a feeling i would have appreciated match point some more if i had gotten the opera references, as i imagine the story paralleled a specific one. it certainly had all the typical opera elements.

also a noteworthy lack of comments on scarlett from greg.

looking forward to that ennio morricone score in fateless.
