Trailer Watch
I am really happy that The World’s Fastest Indian is finally coming out so I never have to see that damn trailer again. The most interesting and promising trailer I have seen recently was for The Libertine, starring Johnny Depp, Samantha Morton and John Malkovich. I’m not really into period pieces but Depp looks like he’s killing this role, and as a whole I found myself wanting to see the flick even though the trailer started out with THE WEINSTEIN COMPANY in big letters. Although I didn’t see it in the theatre, I was recently pointed towards the trailer for Brick, a modern noir starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt who blew my mind in Mysterious Skin. I was already stoked to see this movie and now I’m totally stoked. Firewall looks like it could be a good action romp, however I’m sure all the technology details will be completely botched, totally ruining it for me (see also virus upload in Independence Day, flying around the 3-D mainframe in Jurassic Park, etc etc etc.) I saw some others but it wasn’t noteworthy. Oh, except there is this Coke commercial I’ve seen twice now in the theatre which uses “The Slider” by T-Rex as background music. A lot of people get really put off by favorite songs being used in commercials but it doesn’t really bother me. Hey, as far as I’m concerned, The Buzzcocks and The Smiths and Iggy Pop and all my other post-punk faves deserve to finally see a payoff after sitting around broke for decades. Marc Bolan might be dead and not able to finally reap the pleasures of his cash-in, but I’d still rather hear this cranking out of the sound system than whatever bullshit Kelly Clarkson is trying to hoist on the kids of today.

i love watching trailers so much i start quoting their stupid lines. “i’m going to set a land speed record!” it’s also fun gauging the audience with the same trailer in different theaters. i recall at one particular theater (Seven Gables, before Brokeback Mountain), the audience was particularly humored for some reason by the Indian trailer, which seemed worrysome but through the feature film it ended up not being too problematic.
