Well, I love almost all the bands you list (esp Husker Du and Wilco) so I'm definitely not the guy to ask.

Minneapolis band most in need of rediscovery: Baby Astronauts.

You know i've never understood the reasoning behind the musical taste of minneapolis. The music that seems to become locally popular here generally lacks creativity, musicianship, decent lyrics, or even a soul.

I'm going to go out on a limb here with a couple of controversial statements... but I think 89.3 promotes absolute crap, be it local, or "across the pond". The previous incarnations of it were all quite questionable as well, Rev105, Radio K. Sometimes they play music that is so bad that I want scream, cry, throw things, or drive my car up 35W ignoring the "road closed" signs.

I personally can't stand The Hold Steady, especially that goddamn "southtown girls" song... a perfect example of a shallow, poorly written, cliche piece of shit that somehow finds its way on the radio. But I also can't stand, Bob Mould or his several incarnations, Husker Du, Sugar, Bob Dylan, Wilco, Marcy Playground (ick), Semisonic, or any of the bands that seem to have more city pages ad space than the strip clubs downtown.

Why is minneapolis averse to a decent chord progression, or a set of coherent lyrics?

I'm not that impressed with them either, but I did like the band that spawned them, Lifter Puller. I still think some of the lyrics the guy writes in Hold Steady are amusing, but the music doesn't really do it for me. You could also say, lyrically, that he's been doing the same types of stories for so long it might be getting old. But Eddie and the Cruisers? That was some serious Velveeta, man. If they've gone that far down the highway of cheese, there may be no return.

Hell, I'll be brutally frank: I doubt they have a song as good as "On The Dark Side".
